All of the steps seem to work correctly, but when I open Windows Update, it gets to the point where it asks if I want to do an Express or Custom update, and when I click either one, it gives me an an error saying "Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer", and a link to reinstall said files which also doesn't work.

Is Windows Update simply completely dead for Windows , now? It seems this thread has been dormant since November, but I would hope someone before me would touch on that if they discovered that to be the case. Anyway, I hope someone is able to either figure out something I'm doing wrong or determine that it just doesn't work any more. The only thing I did differently was installing Update Rollup 1 version 2 for Windows Service Pack 4 before anything else, although I don't think that will make any difference.
