Shotwell informed me that I should use Royal Purple SyncroMax manual transmission fluid, and I'll need about three quarts. Also, I somehow got the impression that you have to drain the fluid out, and then actually pump the new fluid up into the transmission using some sort of small pump and tubing assembly?
Is this right? No pics, but I can explain. The drain plug is underneath, and faces sideways, like the oil drain plug. It has a hex-head allen-wrench , and it faces the passenger's side wheel.
It faces the radiator, and also has a hex-head. From the front, it's just to the right of your front engine mount. To fill it, you need a small diameter hose or tube. Run it from the top, down into the fill hole, and fill to spill. It holds just shy of 3 quarts. The SynchroMax has a small spout, so it's easy to fill with a proper-sized tube about a half-inch in diameter. Last edited: Mar 17, Thank you so much, definitely doing this very soon.
My tranny's at k with original fluid, and it's getting a little boggy. Or is there only one kind? Manufacturer Warranty see all. Material see all. Items Included see all. Condition see all. ATF works well enough that it was factory fill for most of the life of the Contour with the change to Ford Honey just a few months before the end of production.
Not only was it factory fill, Ford claimed that it good enough that it never needed changing. Now, most anyone will tell you that there is no thing as lifetime fluid. Changing the ATF may have been enough to keep that from hapening. Also using a fluid with more friction modifier may have prevented those forks from getting so sticky. Friction modifier makes the fluid more slippery. It is probably best that messing with the fluid formulation be left to oil chemists so a high quality fluid such as Torco, Specialty Formulations, or Royal Purple that is specifically blended for manual trans use would be preferred.
Stay away from RedLine as we have seen that it isn't suitable due to sludging. RedLine should have been OK from it's published specs, but it wasn't. The use of Mercon ATF, synthetic or dino, with added friction modifier has been well enough validated by many CEG members that it is safe.
Mercon by itself might not be too bad if changed often enough, but the overall shift quality and transmission operation is greatly improved by using a fluid that has more friction modifier than plain Mercon comes with.
